Everything baby is sooo expensive!

So in this last month, other than being super busy, I've been feeling GREAT! Morning sickness is far away and I've gotten a new boost of energy... But poor Justin's energy has been sucked dry by me tho... All I want to do is shop for baby stuff.. or rather window shop.

I have this checklist of essentials... the list is LONG. So the past week has been spent researching on prices, and after a week, I've lost my stamina. Every shop sells just about the same thing, and the price doesn't differ very much. So I guess we'll be getting everything under the same roof to cut down traveling.

So far we've bought:
2 Avent bottles
Medela breast pump (this is a huge blessing!)
Crib bumper and bedsheets
Clothes that would last us from 0 months to 6 months (lots of em, cause I ordered all of them over the internet, so much cheaper!)

We've been blessed with:
Crib from my aunt
Rocker from my aunt and cousin
Stemlife membership from my dad
Inflatable bath tub from my mom

What's left on the list....:
Stroller
Car seat
Play pen
Crib mattress
Changing table
Other extras

Everything baby is really very expensive, Justin's convinced the industry is prying on parents' desires to provide for their baby to the best of their abilities. Sigh...

Now what's left is for us to draw out a timeline for purchases, spreading out our purchases means lightening the load on our finances. On top of all these there's also the 4k++ for delivery charges. Amazing how expensive having a baby is.

Updates updates!

Hello readers!

So so so sorry for the long absence. December is the season to be busy! I finally have time to note some interesting updates!

We're at 16/17 weeks now... Why I say 16/17 is because the last ultrasound we went for said baby was back to 16 weeks. So we're really confused, but according to the gynae, growth spurts happen and hence the differnce in due dates and gestational age. =) On the doc's side, she's still marking us as 17 weeks, but on our part, we'll stick to 16 weeks just to be safe =)

Good news from gynae, our bean sprout is now at its most stable trimester, hence she'll only need to see us once in 4 weeks. Yay! So our next checkup is on 18th Jan, which should be our 20/21 week where she'll do a comprehensive scan for abnormalities and GENDER!

Speaking of gender, she tried to take a peak at baby's genitalia this week, but baby was shy, and she only caught a slight glimpse. She wasn't confident with that glimpse to give us a conclusive boy or girl, so we'll wait till our next scan. But we're absolutely delighted with either! I already have clothes for both genders!!! By that I mean I have lots of unisex ones (yellow, brown, orange, etc) and a couple of blues for boy and pinks for girl. I couldn't resist!!! My latest purchase was a set from Carter's, blue one says "I love mommy" and on the butt, "and mommy loves me". The pink one says "I love daddy", and on the butt, "and daddy loves me". Note, it's spelt MOMMY!!!! I'm really fussy when it comes to that, it must be an O and not a U! will take a pic of the set when I get my camera back from bean sprout's daddy.

Ohh ya, as of last night, we're upped the level of bean, to bean sprout! Reason being, he/she doesn't look quite like a bean anymore (or rather, hasn't looked the bill long ago). Now he/she's got long long limbs, and is soo long CRL. So, we've added on the "sprout", hence BEAN SPROUT! The next increase in level will see sprout being changed to a stalk!! Hehehehehe. We're having fun with nicknames.... And if you're wondering about actual names, nope, we have none yet. Bean sprout daddy is holding on it till gender is confirmed and he has sudden "inspiration". Hmmmm =/

So, that's all the updates I have this time, stay tuned for more... when I find the time to? hehehehe. OOohh yes, I know I've missed out weeks of momma bumps!!!! argggg. Now I won't have a complete collection.. Sigh, but yes, the bump has finally appeared!!!! It can now be seen under loose fitting clothes!!! Like Adelene said, it has announced itself! =D Shall post that up when I get a pic of it. Hopefully this week?

Take care all!!

My Pill phobia

S0 I've been taking folic acid pills everyday since we started planning to have kids. This pill is a breeze to swallow because I hardly even feel its in my mouth, one gulp and it's down.

Then when I got pregnant, I started taking Progesterone pills, now they were much bigger, but the soft capsule type, so they were easy to swallow too.

Now... as I entered my 2nd trimester, gynae prescribed me prenatal supplements - Obimin, and calcium ones too... These pills....... these pills!!!!!!!!!!! I gag almost every time I swallow them. Thank God nausea is much lesser now.... If I had taken these pills in the first trimester, it would have been horrible.

I can't swallow pills very well... especially HUGE ones.. and believe me, these are HUGE for my humble swallowing ability. I just finished my once a day gagging ritual with darling hubby by my side, coaching me in the 'ways of pill swallowing'. He is an expert I tell you. But his techniques didn't quite work for me... =(

Here's a shot of the 2 pills....

The dark red one is a semi soft capsule kinda thing... so I can't half that... but I found it went down easier when I bit it in the center just to dent it into a V shape. =D

Now the yellow one is the killer.. it's HARD and THICK!!!! GRRRRRrr. So I split it into 2 with my pill splitter!! =D I really would like to split it into 4... but I'm a bit weary if that would affect anything... Some pills have a no-crushing-or-splitting-allowed policy, but I read the info sheet and nothing was mentioned, so to achieve some sort of balance between lesser gagging and weariness towards splitting the pill, I decided to half it instead of quartering it. Makes sense? Probably not.. but it sure helps with the swallowing.

Now I dread swallowing these pills... every night after dinner.... =(

But Justin reminds me every time, it's for the baby! Think of the baby!! Yes dear... I am.

I hope to finish this 30 day course, and then ask the gynae for a different brand.... actually... a smaller pill... Ohhh Lord help me!!

Gynae visits - 3

Went for our week 12 checkup yesterday. Couldn't see the baby clearly as the gynae said I had lots of wind inside me which interfered with the ultrasound waves. =(

But but but, we were thrilled!!! Baby grew and is now 6.04cm crown to rump! And the head was HUGE. We also saw long long legs and nice arms and hands =D Still thumb sucking.

What greeted us on the screen was an upside down baby! Yeap, head was downwards. So interesting! With much prodding and coaxing from the doctor (or more like annoyance XD) bean squirmed and wiggled back into the regular position.

Gynae was pleased with what she saw. She said she was mainly looking out for the nice back bone (which we saw!! ), a nicely formed nose, and no swelling in the neck area. So we had 3 positives! On top of that, there was no sugar and no protein in my urine, another 2 positives!

And this time, Justin brought the camera to record a video of the ultrasound. To all mothers to be out there, bring a video cam to record those ultrasound moments, they are amazing!!

Thank You Lord for holding us through this journey. 1 trimester down, 2 more to go!! Praise the Lord!

Baby spurts - week 12

Hello Week 12!!!
It's been a long journey, but I gladly wave goodbye to the first trimester! =D

Here's more info about this week from Babycenter.com

How your baby's growing:

The most dramatic development this week: reflexes. Your baby's fingers will soon begin to open and close, his toes will curl, his eye muscles will clench, and his mouth will make sucking movements. In fact, if you prod your abdomen, your baby will squirm in response, although you won't be able to feel it. His intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into his abdominal cavity about now, and his kidneys will begin excreting urine into his bladder.

Meanwhile, nerve cells are multiplying rapidly, and in your baby's brain, synapses are forming furiously. His face looks unquestionably human: His eyes have moved from the sides to the front of his head, and his ears are right where they should be. From crown to rump, your baby-to-be is just over 2 inches long (about the size of a lime) and weighs half an ounce.

See what your baby looks like this week. (Or see what fraternal twins look like in the womb this week.)

Note: Every baby develops a little differently, even in the womb. Our information is designed to give you a general idea of your baby's development.

How your life's changing:

Your uterus has grown to the point where your healthcare provider can now feel the top of it (the fundus) low in your abdomen, just above your pubic bone. You may already be into maternity clothes, especially if this isn't your first pregnancy. If you're still fairly small and not yet ready for maternity clothes, you've no doubt noticed that your waist is thickening and that you're more comfortable in loose, less restrictive clothing.

You may begin to feel heartburn (also called acid indigestion), a burning sensation that often extends from the bottom of your breastbone to your lower throat. Many women get heartburn for the first time during pregnancy, and those who've previously had bouts of heartburn may find that it gets worse. During pregnancy, the placenta produces a lot of the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach. Particularly when you're lying down, gastric acid can seep back up the pipe, which causes the uncomfortable burning sensation. For many women the problem doesn't begin (or get worse) until later in pregnancy, when your growing uterus starts to push up on your stomach. The discomfort may range from mildly annoying to intense and distracting.

Baby Spurts - week 11

Hellooooo Week 11!

Entered week 11 last Saturday. Here's what's happening to the baby bean!

How your baby's growing:

  • The fetus CRL is about 1.5 inches (35mm) in size.
  • The fingers and toes have completely separated.
  • The taste buds are starting to develop.
  • Baby has tooth buds, the beginning of the complete set of 20 milk teeth.
  • Baby can swallow and stick out his or her tongue.
  • Whole body except tongue is sensitive to touch.
  • Cartilage now calcifying to become bone.
  • If it is a boy, the testicles are starting to produce the testosterone hormone.
Your baby, just over 1 1/2 inches long and about the size of a fig, is now almost fully formed. Her hands will soon open and close into fists, tiny tooth buds are beginning to appear under her gums, and some of her bones are beginning to harden.

She's already busy kicking and stretching, and her tiny movements are so effortless they look like water ballet. These movements will become more frequent as her body grows and becomes more developed and functional. You won't feel your baby's acrobatics for another month or two — nor will you notice the hiccupping that may be happening now that her diaphragm is forming.

See what your baby looks like this week.

Note: Every baby develops a little differently — even in the womb. Our information is designed to give you a general idea of your baby's development.

How your life's changing:

If you're like most women, you're feeling a bit more energetic now and your nausea may be starting to wane. Unfortunately, you may also be suffering from constipation (caused by hormonal changes, which can slow digestion) and heartburn (hormones again, relaxing the valve between your stomach and esophagus). Just remember, all this discomfort is for a good cause.

Don't worry if nausea has made it impossible for you to eat a wide variety of healthy foods or if you haven't put on much weight yet (most women gain just 2 to 5 pounds during the first trimester). Your appetite will likely return soon, and you'll start to gain about a pound a week.

Learn which of your symptoms are normal and which are a sign that something might be wrong. You're probably also wondering things like, Can I keep going to dance class? Could the air bags in my car hurt my baby? Which cold medications are safe to take now? Find out what's safe and what's not during pregnancy.

Baby Spurts - Week 10

Welcome Week 10!

How your baby's growing:

Though he's barely the size of a kumquat — a little over an inch or so long, crown to bottom — and weighs less than a quarter of an ounce, your baby has now completed the most critical portion of his development. This is the beginning of the so-called fetal period, a time when the tissues and organs in his body rapidly grow and mature.

He's swallowing fluid and kicking up a storm. Vital organs — including his kidneys, intestines, brain, and liver (now making red blood cells in place of the disappearing yolk sac) — are in place and starting to function, though they'll continue to develop throughout your pregnancy.

If you could take a peek inside your womb, you'd spot minute details, like tiny nails forming on fingers and toes (no more webbing) and peach-fuzz hair beginning to grow on tender skin.

In other developments: Your baby's limbs can bend now. His hands are flexed at the wrist and meet over his heart, and his feet may be long enough to meet in front of his body. The outline of his spine is clearly visible through translucent skin, and spinal nerves are beginning to stretch out from his spinal cord. Your baby's forehead temporarily bulges with his developing brain and sits very high on his head, which measures half the length of his body. From crown to rump, he's about 1 1/4 inches long. In the coming weeks, your baby will again double in size — to nearly 3 inches.

See what your baby looks like this week.

Note: Every baby develops a little differently — even in the womb. Our information is designed to give you a general idea of your baby's development.

How your life's changing:

At your next prenatal visit, you may be able to hear your baby's rapid heartbeat with the help of a Doppler stethoscope, a handheld ultrasound device that your practitioner places on your belly. Many women say that the beating of their baby's tiny heart sounded like the thunder of galloping horses and hearing it for the first time was very moving.

Before you got pregnant, your uterus was the size of a small pear. By this week, it's as big as a grapefruit. You may or may not be ready for maternity wear now. Even if you're not there yet, your regular clothes are probably feeling uncomfortably tight and your blossoming breasts are straining the seams of your bra. The thickening in your midsection is most likely due to slight weight gain and bloating. If you're between regular and maternity clothes, pants and skirts with forgiving elastic waistbands (or low-rise waistlines that sit below your belly) will provide some much-needed comfort.

Depending on your level of fitness, you can most likely participate in a wide range of activities during pregnancy. Swimming and walking are excellent choices for the whole nine months. Exercise promotes muscle tone, strength, and endurance — three qualities that can help you carry the weight you gain during pregnancy, prepare you for the physical stress of labor, and make it easier to get back into shape after your baby is born. (Unfortunately, there's no evidence that regular exercise shortens labor.)

Dealing with evening sickness "My version of morning sickness developed every evening around dinnertime. I couldn't eat anything, but I was starving (and cranky) nonetheless. Things improved after I adjusted my schedule, eating my big meal in the morning and something light — usually crackers and cheese or cereal — for dinner." — Susan

Ultrasound Scans

Justin has been fiddling with the scanner to get the best settings to get clear ultrasound pics scanned... but after that, it was still blur. So we decided to use our good old digital camera's macro function. Here they are.

4 weeks
Gestational sac (GS): 0.89cm

6 weeks
GS: 1.92cm
Crown to Rump length (CRL): 0.71cm

8 weeks
CRL: 1.79cm

10 weeks
CRL: 4.01cm

** Observe week 10, the bulge on the left is the baby's head, the second bulge is the big tummy =D. What's sooo special about this picture is that there's some thumb sucking action!! Look closely!

Our second one

So the cat is out of the bag. Now all of you know that Sher-Mayne is pregnant again. Quite fast if you ask me. After all, it wasn’t too long ago that we lost our first one. Now that the second one arrived about 4 months after the first, we are looking at a June baby.

Having this was somewhat similar with the first and at the same time different. Both are similar in that they were unexpected. However, they were different because the first one was unplanned and the second one was. The first one really caught me by surprise and I must admit, I wasn’t really ready then. This one however, we consciously agreed and decided to have him/her but even so, it was unexpected in its own way.

Let me explain. We decided to conceive during my birthday in September. Things were going along fine as Sher-Mayne’s cycle more or less was normal for 2 months. Then came Sept and it seemed as though she was fertile much earlier without any mid pains. I thought this was due to her polycystic ovaries (early fertile period with no mid pains). So my birthday came and went without her appearing to be fertile. She didn’t feel anything, I didn’t feel anything. Then one day came when she just decided that she should test. I can’t remember what was the reason but it was pretty random. And then bam, she tested positive. What happened? Wasn’t it a cyst that burst? She wasn’t during that period. I was at a loss at how to explain or even understand what happened. So now I have had to conclude it was God because there is no other explanation. What I will be doing is to watch this one carefully because if it was really God, then not only will great things follow, hard times will accompany it.

Nevertheless, it shall not detract from the fact that God gave.

The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised. – Job 1:21

Whale-ly Updates 9

Hello readers!

This week, nausea and gastric reflux has decreased to 10% of my worst weeks!! That's a huge 90% reduction. Reduction started about 1 week back and symptoms have been decreasing almost daily! I admit I am a bit worried, but there is still this calm in me. Thank you Holy Spirit!

As of today, my only symptoms include: lots and lots of lethargy, heavy white discharge, breast tenderness, feeling bloated, and I needing to eat every hour to 2 hours. =)

My next gynae visit is next Thursday. Hope to see a healthy, alive, and jiggling 10 week bean! Oohhh yaaa we've named the bub Bean!!! Justin blurted out Mr. Bean which sent us laughing. =D Mainly because we saw a kidney bean on the dinner table and realised that the bub and the bean resembled each other. So bean bean it is =D

Baby spurts - week 9

HELLOOOOO Week 9!!!

This week:
  • The embryo has grown to measure 30 mm (1.2 inches) in length.
  • The fingers and toes are well defined. Cartilage and bones begin to form.
  • The upper lip as well as the nose tip is being formed.
  • The tongue begins to develop and the larynx is developing.
  • The eyelids are developed, although they stay closed for several months.
  • The main construction of the heart is complete.
Your new resident is nearly an inch long — about the size of a grape — and weighs just a fraction of an ounce. She's starting to look more and more human. Her essential body parts are accounted for, though they'll go through plenty of fine-tuning in the coming months. Other changes abound: Your baby's heart finishes dividing into four chambers, and the valves start to form — as do her tiny teeth. The embryonic "tail" is completely gone. Your baby's organs, muscles, and nerves are kicking into gear. The external sex organs are there but won't be distinguishable as male or female for another few weeks. Her eyes are fully formed, but her eyelids are fused shut and won't open until 27 weeks. She has tiny earlobes, and her mouth, nose, and nostrils are more distinct. The placenta is developed enough now to take over most of the critical job of producing hormones. Now that your baby's basic physiology is in place, she's poised for rapid weight gain.

See what's going on in your uterus this week.

Note: Every baby develops a little differently — even in the womb. Our information is designed to give you a general idea of your baby's development.

How your life's changing:

You still may not look pregnant even if your waist is thickening a bit. You probably feel pregnant, though. Not only are morning sickness and other physical symptoms out in full force for most women, but you may feel like an emotional pinball as well.

Mood swings are common now — it's perfectly normal to feel alternately elated and terrified about becoming a parent. Try to cut yourself some slack. Most women find that moodiness flares up at around six to ten weeks, eases up in the second trimester, and then reappears as pregnancy winds to a close.

How my life has changed since pregnancy

You know how people say that life changes dramatically when you get pregnant? More so for the women than the men? I never really sat down to think about such life changes. Today seems like a good day to do so.

Apart from the physical aspect which I blog in my Whale-ly updates, lots of changes have been taking place in the emotional and psychological person as well.

When I first found out I was pregnant, I was elated. I kept thanking God that I was pregnant again! But deep inside, there was this inhibitor, something that kept me from rejoicing totally. The previous miscarriage still weight heavily on me, and there was a sense that this was so surreal.

Weeks after that I caught myself taking extra care of my body, taking slower steps down the stairs, not running, not shouting, not carrying heavy things, which is hard for me to do... See, I am a workaholic as Justin would say. I cannot sit still and watch while there are things left undone. I need to do them. So for me to slow down my pace, and to need to ask for help when it comes to carrying things or doing basic housework, is torture. It made me feel helpless. I felt needy, and as though I was a burden. Till now I still can't function perfectly at work, I get bouts of nausea, gastric reflux, dizziness, and lethargy that makes me even more helpless.

Then there's this morphing body to deal with... my tummy and waist areas have risen up to declare that they exist. As a result, I feel fat and unattractive. Big blow to the self esteem... People say pregnant women glow. Yeah right... I'm sure they weren't refering to the first trimester preggers. For me, there's no glow in sight. Clothes are getting tighter, and there's only so many loose pieces I have. =/

But inspite of all the horrid feelings I've been experiencing, there's also this sense of calm and thankfulness... that I have been given this precious gift. People tell me that this thankfulness comes full blow when I hold my baby in my arms for the first time. I'll wait till then to confirm that. =D

Relationship wise, it's been different too... as I mentioned, because of the myriad of things I cannot do, Justin has to pitch in and take on my part. It's not very nice to feel like I'm not contributing as much and to watch the other partner burn out faster due to the many responsibilities that require his attention.

Sometimes I wish I could celebrate this pregnancy like I envisioned I would. But I guess that may have to wait till the second trimester? I hope...

So in short, life has changed quite a bit... even though my baby is less than 1 inch CRL now, he/she is sure making a great impact on every aspect of his/her mommy's life.

Whale-ly Updates 8

Hello readers.

Haven't written about my bodily changes in a while.

First stop, I'm putting weight... 1kg to be exact (since getting pregnant) and it shows in my tummy and arm area, so some people have started speculating that I'm pregnant. =/

Secondly, there's this crazy lethargy that surprised me this afternoon. I felt really really tired before and throughout lunch. When I got home, I only had enough energy to change and climb onto bed and then falling into a deep sleep for 3 hours. And now (9.48pm) I'm still tired! Why I'm surprised is because I haven't been feeling this tired for about 2 weeks now.

Gastric reflux is gradually decreasing (HOORAY!) and hunger pangs have decreased significantly in this past week. =D But I've learned that I MUST eat on time, especially dinner @ 6pm. Anything later will mean gastric reflux and my whole night will be spent dealing with metallic taste in my mouth, trying to burp so the gas will leave my stomach, and at the same time trying to make sure I keep my food down.

In addition, I can't eat heavy meals. I need to eat small amounts at a frequent time span. Take yesterday for example. I ate dinner at my mom's about 6.15, and at around 7.15 I took another round. Also, I've realised that for me, warm/hot food sits way better than cold stuff. Ooo and soft drinks are a no no. Too much gas = bad bad gastric reflux.

My abdomen hasn't been feeling as sore and stretchy as few weeks ago, but this week my back has been terribly sore! I don't know if it's the bed, my sleeping position, or the pregnancy. I know I haven't put on enough weight for my backbone to feel it but... Any one has any clue?

Finally, mood swings.... =/ Over the past 2 weeks, I've been ding-donging from worried + crying to placid. This few days, I've been somewhere between placid, angry+crying, and feeling very lonely. Everything's just a mess, and some days I just wish I could retreat somewhere for a nice long holiday... I just want to be somewhere where I can not look at the mirror, not need to try to look or feel normal, and just relax. I told Justin the other day, I don't feel beautiful anymore. I feel like crap, and I even look like crap now. Especially when gastric reflux and nausea hits, I look pale, listless, and grumpy. And people keep reminding me to stay happy so that I will have a positive and happy child. Oooohhh how I wish I could. I want to celebrate my pregnancy too... but at this stage, it just seems physically, psychologically, and emotionally oh-so-challenging.

But all that said... I'm currently at week 9. So that leaves me 3 more weeks of this. I have approximately 2 weeks of progesterone pills to go, then I'll be off of it! I'm sure that will minimize the morning (whole-day) sickness. Hallelujah!

Note: I'm not trying to sound ungrateful. I am 110% grateful to God for this baby! And if I was told that I would suffer like this before I had this baby, I'd still ask God for this baby. It's just nice to share how I'm feeling in this trimester of great bodily change. =)

Gynae visits - 2

HELLO!!

The LONGGGG awaited checkup has come and gone. I was anxious about the 8th week checkup following the last miscarriage. So I scheduled this one to be after 8 weeks 1 day. Initially we were supposed to see her yesterday (Wednesday) but due to an emergency, all appointments were pushed to Thursday morning instead.

Sooooo... Finally, I lay down and fixed my eyes on the ultrasound machine, saw the sac, but didn't know where to look for the heartbeat!! Then the doc said, ahhh, there's the heartbeat. Very nice indeed. And then my eyes caught sight of the blinking dot. Beating so so so fast!!!

Gynae said that the estimated due date is 8th June 2010. =D All we can say now is, LORD YOU ARE SO SO SO SO GOOD!!! PRAISE YOU!!!

Baby spurts - Week 8

Welcome to Week 8!

This week:
  • The embryo measures about 18 mm (3/4 inch) in length.
  • Their arms and legs are growing and location of the elbows and toes are visible..
  • The feet and hand buds have appeared.
  • Starts to practice moving (not felt by mom till week 20)
  • The stomach is being made from part of the gut.
  • The face is beginning to take shape.
  • Your baby's mouth and nostrils are starting to develop.
  • Teeth begin to develop under the gums.
  • The eyes can now be seen as small hollows on each side of the head.

New this week: Webbed fingers and toes are poking out from your baby's hands and feet, his eyelids practically cover his eyes, breathing tubes extend from his throat to the branches of his developing lungs, and his "tail" is just about gone. In his brain, nerve cells are branching out to connect with one another, forming primitive neural pathways. You may be daydreaming about your baby as one sex or the other, but the external genitals still haven't developed enough to reveal whether you're having a boy or a girl. Either way, your baby — about the size of a kidney bean — is constantly moving and shifting, though you still can't feel it.
Do visit this site to see what's going on in the uterus this week. =D

Note: Every baby develops a little differently — even in the womb. Our information is designed to give you a general idea of your baby's development.

How your life's changing:

You may notice that your bra is getting more snug. Soon you'll likely need a larger size with better support. Rising levels of hormones cause breast growth and other tissue changes, all in preparation for lactation. Your breasts may continue to grow throughout pregnancy. Don't be surprised if you go up a cup size or two, especially if it's your first baby. Keep this in mind, and allow for room to grow when investing in a new bra.

Feeling fatigued? Hormonal changes — in particular, a dramatic rise in progesterone — may be contributing to your sluggishness. Nausea and vomiting can certainly cost you energy, too. And you may be having trouble getting a good night's sleep at this point, especially if you're uncomfortable or find you need to get up to pee.
Walking to beat fatigue "Taking a short 15- to 20-minute walk helped me cope with the overwhelming fatigue that hit me in the first trimester. It was the only way I made it through a day at work without a nap!" —Gabriela

Walking with the Maker - 2

I'm sitting here wondering why I'm typing this... In the past God spoke through my mindless typing.. I'd sit and just type what my fingers felt like (literally) and then read what I had typed... Countless times, I'd realise that God had spoken through my fingers.. yeap... I guess today I'm desperate for something from God...

Yesterday morning, I noticed 2 pink spots on my chest... I proceeded to shove any negative thoughts away. Then in the afternoon, one more appeared on my elbow... Still negative thoughts were shoved away. After supper, 4 new bright pink spots had appeared.. 2 on each leg. That's when I broke down. Flashbacks came flooding in and I felt like I was trying so very hard to hold down the floodgates to keep the flood of emotions, fears, negative thoughts, and flashbacks that would pour in. But every minute required more energy. Every time I saw the spots my heart ached. And all I said was God No..... I want this baby! I read the Bible and all that was there was a call for me to draw closer to Him.... I cried and that was the end of the night.

This morning, the same number of spots remained... till afternoon, then 2 new ones appeared on my shoulder. I spent the whole day trying to keep the floodgates as tightly closed as possible... as well as trying hard to keep gastric reflux at bay. Needless to say, I was just so tired by the end of the work day.

My students stayed back after school for worship practice. Delaney the worship leader shared why she chose the song "Evermore" and how it had touched her. On May 21st, the morning after we found out we had lost our first baby, I went to work, and the pianist on duty did not know how to play the song "Evermore". So I went up to take his place. The words read... "As I look upon Your name circumstances fade away... now my soul, my soul cries out, You are Holy"... Evermore my heart my heart will say, above all I live for Your glory... I did not want to sing those words. I did not want to live for His glory, I just wanted my baby back. But nevertheless I still played and my mouth still sang. The pain was... indescribable as I uttered those words that above all I live for Your glory.

A few weeks back, for conversation sake, I asked Justin... what if we loose this one as well? He said... we'll try for another... and I said no... He then went on to say.. then we'll just continue living for His glory until we go to heaven and be united with our family...

Now I'm standing at a crossroad. I have 2 viable choices: 1. Continue thinking that I have lost this child and worry; 2. Know that my pink spots are back, know that there is a chance that I may miscarry again, but also know that God is God, and He's holding me now as He always have.

I'm choosing option 2. It's hard... because my next appointment is next Wednesday (past the 8 week 1 day mark)... and I have not heard an audible voice of God saying all will be well, neither have I seen visions or dreamt dreams that my baby will be well... But I have His promises that He always has my best in mind, He will make my joy complete, and a promise that His grace is above so much...

To those of you who have lost children.. born or unborn... you'll understand that the pain is so deep... especially if you know there is nothing you could've done to prevent it... May you continue to hold on to God even though choosing so does not make any sense.

Till my next appointment and ultrascan, I'm believing that my child will live, my child is now being fearfully and wonderfully made. In short... I'm believing that I am having this child!!

Baby spurts - week 7

Welcome to Week 7!

This week:
  • The embryo is around 13 mm (1/2 inch) in length.
  • The heart is beating with one chamber.
  • A dividing wall is formed in the heart.
  • Arm and leg buds begin to grow.
  • The lower jaw and the vocal cords are beginning to form.
  • The mouth opening is formed.
  • The inner ear is being created.
  • The digestive tract is developing
  • The navel string is being created
  • The following organs are being formed: the lungs, the liver, the pancreas and the thyroid gland.

How your baby's growing:

The big news this week: Hands and feet are emerging from developing arms and legs — although they look more like paddles at this point than the tiny, pudgy extremities you're daydreaming about holding and tickling. Technically, your baby is still considered an embryo and has something of a small tail, which is an extension of her tailbone. The tail will disappear within a few weeks, but that's the only thing getting smaller. Your baby has doubled in size since last week and now measures half an inch long, about the size of a blueberry.

If you could see inside your womb, you'd spot eyelid folds partially covering her peepers, which already have some color, as well as the tip of her nose and tiny veins beneath parchment-thin skin. Both hemispheres of your baby's brain are growing, and her liver is churning out red blood cells until her bone marrow forms and takes over this role. She also has an appendix and a pancreas, which will eventually produce the hormone insulin to aid in digestion. A loop in your baby's growing intestines is bulging into her umbilical cord, which now has distinct blood vessels to carry oxygen and nutrients to and from her tiny body.

See what's going on in your uterus this week.

Note: Every baby develops a little differently — even in the womb. Our information is designed to give you a general idea of your baby's development.

How your life's changing:

Your uterus has doubled in size in the past five weeks, and eating may feel like a chore — or worse — thanks to morning sickness, which by now may be in full swing. (If you're feeling fine, don't worry — you're lucky!)

You may need to pee more than usual, too, thanks to your increasing blood volume and the extra fluid being processed through your kidneys. (By now, you already have about 10 percent more blood than you did before you were pregnant. And by the end of your pregnancy, you'll have 40 to 45 percent more blood running through your veins to meet the demands of your full-term baby.) As your uterus grows, pressure on your bladder will send you to the bathroom as well.

About half of the women who feel nauseated during the first trimester will find complete relief by about 14 weeks. For most of the rest, it'll take another month or so for the queasiness to ease up. It's unlikely, though, that the need to pee more than usual will ease up. In fact, research shows that both the frequency and volume of urine tends to increase over the course of pregnancy.

Whale-ly Updates 7

Hello again.

I'm currently at Week 7 and 2 days. I had a good break from gastric/nausea from last Wednesday to Saturday evening. Yesterday (Sunday) was bad... I had so much pain, nausea, and a few almost vomit sessions... spent the whole night not being able to sleep well... And this morning, I finally vomited. Felt much better after that but I'm worried about trying to keep the Progesterone pill in. Haven't been able to take much food today... water is worse... at most I can only take a few sips before feeling queasy again. =/

Oh well... I told God, please... may this only be confined to the 1st trimester. I want a beautiful 2nd trimester! So that would mean that I have about 4 weeks and 5 days more of this.

Oh my baby... you better love mommy!!

Baby spurts - week 6

Welcome to Week 6!

Note: There are 2 ways of counting pregnancy weeks: 1. week 1 starts from the first day of the last period; 2. week 1 starts from the first day of fertilization. I shall be using the latter. =)

Week Six: The heart begins to beat

This week:
  • The embryo has reached a size of about 8 mm (1/4 inch) in length.
  • The spinal cord, which until now has been open, is beginning to close.
  • The first blood cells and blood vessels are developing.
  • Blood moves through these primitive vessels connected to the yolk sac.
  • A pipe-shaped heart is formed and begins to beat.
  • The brain begins to divide into 5 parts.
  • Optic pits form the start of the developing eye.
  • The cells destined to be the arms and legs are in place.
You might not be able to stop yawning long enough to read this! Your baby develops rapidly during the first few weeks of pregnancy, which is why women tend to feel so tired in the first trimester. To help your baby thrive, you need plenty of rest and early nights, as well as fresh air, regular exercise and a healthy diet. Sleeping in a jog bra can help the breast soreness.

Many of your symptoms are the same as last week. Some women may also get headaches from the rise in hormones. There are also a lot of women who will have none of these symptoms. They will sail through early pregnancy without vomiting or being light headed. For a lot of women this can be normal as well. Do not panic if you do not have pregnancy symptoms, although you should contact your care provider if you suddenly lose your pregnancy symptoms.

embryo 5 weeksAt this time the embryo is still smaller than the size of a raisin. Low on the sides of the head are two folds of tissue that will become the ears. Although not completely developed, all the major body organs and systems are formed. The heart also forms, and it begins to beat on the 25th day after conception (about 6 weeks after the last menstrual period), and a heart beat can already be detected.

The neural tube enlarges into three parts, that will soon to develop to become a very complex brain. Also the placenta begins functioning, known as the chorionic villi and the umbilical cord, through which the baby will receive nourishment and oxygen. The spine and spinal cord grows faster than the rest of the body at this stage and will give the appearance of a tail. This will disappear as the baby continues to grow.

Gynae visits - 1

We first saw the gynae on 2nd Oct when we were 4 weeks and the abdominal ultrasound (US) showed a gestational sac (GS) diameter of 0.89cm.

Second visit was on 5th Oct because of the dizzy spells caused by Progesterone pills and another US was done where GS was 1.03cm.

Third visit was today 14th Oct and an abdominal US showed a GS measuring 1.92cm (5weeks 5 days), but no heartbeat could be detected as it was still early. So we opted for a transvaginal US which showed a very clear picture of our baby, with a good strong heartbeat! It also showed that the crown to rump length (CRL) measured 0.9cm and baby was in fact 6 weeks and 4 days old! Our baby's growing on track! PRAISE THE LORD!!

After the transvaginal US, I went to pee, and discovered blood on my panties. Fresh blood... So we went back up to the gynae and she gave me an injection to stabilize the pregnancy (more hormones) and told me to go back for bed rest. She mentioned that it could be nothing more that just the effect of the transvaginal scan, so she concluded that to be safe, she won't do anymore transvaginal scans. =(

the blood stopped a while ago. It was like a one off thing. And the most amazing thing was, I felt a deep calmness throughout. So much peace. So I knew everything's going to be perfect! =) God is good!

Gastric reflux

Here's some facts about gastric reflux. I tried drinking milk and it seemed to help =)

Gastric Reflux
Posted Jun 02 2009 4:40pm

What is Acid Reflux?
Acid reflux is a condition where gastric juices containing acid travel back from the stomach into the esophagus (gullet or swallowing tube). Symptoms of acid reflux include:

  • Heartburn (a burning feeling rising from the stomach or lower chest up towards the neck).

  • Regurgitation (bringing food back up into the mouth).

  • Chest pain.

  • Difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia).

  • Hoarseness, dental erosion and asthma (because acidic juices can make their way into the throat, mouth and air passages of the lungs).

How do you get Acid Reflux?
Some people experience this problem regularly and have a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD.

  • The food in the stomach is partially digested by stomach acid and enzymes, which are special chemicals that help to break down food so the body can use it.

  • Normally, the partially digested acidic content in the stomach is delivered by the stomach muscle into the small intestine (bowel) for further digestion.

  • In patients with acid reflux, stomach acid content travels backwards into the esophagus, causing inflammation and damage.

  • Factors contributing to acid reflux include fatty foods, cigarettes, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, obesity, pregnancy and delayed stomach emptying.

  • Obesity and pregnancy increase pressures within the abdomen (body trunk), pushing the stomach contents back into the esophagus.

  • Some patients have stomachs that empty their contents into the intestines very slowly.

  • A stomach full of food and acid is more prone to reflux, especially when the patient lies down (supine)..
  • How serious is Acid Reflux?
For most people with acid reflux, the discomfort associated with symptoms can affect quality of life and everyday activities, including work. Acid reflux is also the cause of heartburn and in severe cases, this can be very troublesome. When esophagatis is present the lining of the esophagus is damaged and may become ulcerated and can result in narrowing, making swallowing of food and, sometimes, liquids, painful and difficult.

How long does Acid Reflux last?
Acid reflux can last several months or longer if not treated. Drug treatment is often only needed for a short time although it may have to be repeated since some symptoms may re-occur.

    How is Acid Reflux treated?
Medications commonly used in the treatment of acid reflux include:

    • Acid suppressants, such as histamine2-receptor antagonists (blockers). Histamine is a chemical released in the body under different conditions, but particularly during inflammation. In the stomach it can release more acid, so blocking it reduces acid production.

    • Proton pump inhibitors, which reduce the production of acid in the stomach by acting on cells in the stomach wall that make acid and release it into the stomach.

    • Prokinetic agents, which promote emptying of the stomach so it does not overfill. They work by increasing the pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter (the muscular valve between the lower end of the stomach and the small bowel)
    • Antacids are over-the-counter medicines that are commonly used to treat mild acid-related symptoms, like heartburn or indigestion, and work by neutralising acid in the stomach. However, they are not usually recommended to treat the frequent heartburn suffered by people with GERD.

    Psalm 71

On an off I worry. I'm 6 weeks along now and at the back of my mind I know my first baby went home to the Lord at 8 weeks and 1 day. I try keeping blinders on, and they've been helping. But there are days where the preggers symptoms are lesser and I worry (cause with the last one I totally lost all symptoms within 3 days). Sometimes I feel weak... like I have no strength to keep this up.. this fighting. But that's the beauty of Grace of Our God. That when I am the weakest, I know He is His strongest always.

Shortly after I miscarried, a video on 99 balloons was shown in church (google up the story!) And this was the verse that came up in their website. I've been holding on to this since then. If anyone's reading this and you've feeling or experiencing similar things, I hope this encourages you. Remember the GOD we serve is Mighty and All Powerful.

    Psalm 71

    God the Rock of Salvation
    1 In You, O LORD, I put my trust;
Let me never be put to shame.
    2 Deliver me in Your righteousness, and cause me to escape;
Incline Your ear to me, and save me.
    3 Be my strong refuge,
    To which I may resort continually;
You have given the commandment to save me,
For You are my rock and my fortress.

4 Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked,
Out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.
    5 For You are my hope, O Lord GOD;
You are my trust from my youth.
    6 By You I have been upheld from birth;
You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb.
My praise shall be continually of You.

7 I have become as a wonder to many,
But You are my strong refuge.
8 Let my mouth be filled with Your praise
And with Your glory all the day.

    9 Do not cast me off in the time of old age;
Do not forsake me when my strength fails.
    10 For my enemies speak against me;
And those who lie in wait for my life take counsel together,
    11 Saying, “God has forsaken him;
Pursue and take him, for there is none to deliver him.”

    12 O God, do not be far from me;
O my God, make haste to help me!
13 Let them be confounded and consumed
    Who are adversaries of my life;
Let them be covered with reproach and dishonor
    Who seek my hurt.

14 But I will hope continually,
And will praise You yet more and more.
15 My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness
And Your salvation all the day,
For I do not know their limits.
    16 I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD;
I will make mention of Your righteousness, of Yours only.

    17 O God, You have taught me from my youth;
And to this day I declare Your wondrous works.
18 Now also when I am old and grayheaded,
O God, do not forsake me,
Until I declare Your strength to this generation,
Your power to everyone who is to come.

19 Also Your righteousness, O God, is very high,
    You who have done great things;
O God, who is like You?
20 You, who have shown me great and severe troubles,
    Shall revive me again,
And bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
21 You shall increase my greatness,
And comfort me on every side.

22 Also with the lute I will praise You—
And Your faithfulness, O my God!
To You I will sing with the harp,
    O Holy One of Israel.
23 My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to You,
And my soul, which You have redeemed.
    24 My tongue also shall talk of Your righteousness all the day long;
    For they are confounded,
For they are brought to shame
    Who seek my hurt.

    Whale-ly Updates 7

    Hello again!

I'm currently at Week 6, and my body is slowly but sure morphing!

    Updates this week:

My boobs have grown =( , last night I woke up twice to munch on something cause the gastric was just too unbearable, I've been feeling tired and gastricy throughout the day. Dizziness has been mild so that's a plus point. My abdominal area is still tender and I've grown a little (must be all the food I've been eating =( ) So I've been unable to put on my jeans now, and the number of shorts i can wear comfortably are... running out.

    Till next time

    Whale-ly Updates 6

    Hello again!

My days now consists of waking up in the middle of the night to munch on Jacob's cracks because of gastric juice build up. Then waking up in the morning because of the same. Justin then cuts a kiwi for me to munch on before I get out of bed, because it is not advisable to get out of bed with an empty stomach. The activity only further excites gastric juices and causes me to go into a gagging-almost-vomiting phase. And once that phase takes place, it will carry through the whole day regardless of what I do to appease the angry stomach.

So note to those like me: Jacob cracks (or any other saltine biscuits) work. Always munch on something before getting out of bed. And try to drink at least 2 liters of water a day. If you can't keep water down (or it makes you queasy like me) try Ribena or some other fruit juice.

I've been getting moderate dizzy spells on and off. They last for about 10 minutes or so. A remedy is to put your head between your legs in a crunch position to promote blood flow. =)

I've been surviving. Thank God for a supportive and loving husband who's willing to wait on me hand and foot. Still trying to get him to post something on this blog though. He's just too busy =/ Come on future daddy, the readers want to read what you have to say too! *hint hint*

    Whale-ly Updates 5

    Hello!

Since the start of this week, I've been feeling as though I've slept through the days... In the previous pregnancy, I was dead tired towards the night and slept at 9.30. This pregnancy, I'm tired throughout the day! Especially after lunch. Real bad.... Yesterday I dozed off halfway through peeing. =/

I watched a video by a renowned gynae in an introduction to the second trimester. She mentioned that "while you may feel that you've been sleeping through your first trimester, the second trimester promises a renewed energy level". How true... I'm really looking forward to the second trimester.

I'm also going to start a new category of writing about baby developments called "Baby spurts" =D

    Whale-ly Updates 4

    Hello!

Started taking Utrogestan 100mg (progesterone) on Friday and everything was normal. Pink spots went away on Saturday!! =) But Saturday morning was freaky. Half way through music practice, I felt like I was almost fainting. Couldn't control my body and it was swaying! Started having sweaty palms, vision was fuzzy, and I just felt like my body was turning to Jell-O! Imagine my fear! Rushed to gynae's office right after practice and I was number 42, they were serving number 21. So we left for lunch and came back 2 hours later to discover they were only at number 30! In short, we didn't get to see her on Saturday.

I still continued with the supplements on Sunday and I felt quite normal. But Monday, half way through lunch, it happened again! Finally met gynae on Monday evening and she said this was normal... caused by the dilation of blood vessels and a lack of blood to my head... Lack of blood = lack of oxygen = fainty. Wow... I have to keep eating this until I'm 12 weeks. Hmmmm This is week 5, so there's another 7 to go. =/

But I'm rest assured that this is good for baby and that baby is doing GOOD!

Baby's gestational sac measured 0.89 cm on Friday, it measured 1.03cm yesterday (Monday). Talk about rapid growth.

Week 5, I have 35 weeks more to go. Yipee!

    Whale-ly Updates 3

    Hello!

This morning we had a scare again... I saw pink spots.... Yes pink spots. Ever since getting my period many years ago, I noticed pink spots. These pink spots (non itching, non painful, no feeling) always were present before or during my menstrual. Which means some hormones which signal my period signal the pink spots. And hormones that signal menstruation work against a pregnancy. So, I saw pink spots and my heart raced, I almost cried, and I prayed so hard...

After talking to my husband and parents, I decided to go see the gynae. Waiting in the gynae's office for 1.5 hours was painful... The last time I waited anxiously in her office, I found out I had lost my baby. My hands shook, I was cold, and I was basically very very very anxious... My dad gave me a book on scriptures I could read and I kept reading those scriptures to myself over and over again.

The gynae was pleased when she saw the gestational sac or baby's 'house' as she called it. It was small, so she concluded that I was only about 4 weeks pregnant. No heartbeat seen yet cause it's still too early. She kept repeating that I should relax and not be worried. I had 2 bits of good news: 1. I am indeed pregnant, and the baby is implanted in the right place. THANK GOD.

But then I brought up the issue of my pink spots and how they emerged during menstruation and how it was present the week I found out I was pregnant. She was so nice and patient enough to look through my file, upon which, realised that I had polycystic ovaries. She explained that having polycystic ovaries meant that I had progesterone deficiency. Which was bad, cause a pregnancy is sustained by progesterone.

In conclusion, she prescribed me progesterone pills to be taken twice a day which would help sustain the desired progesterone level and sustain the pregnancy. Thank God for a good health care professional who was patient enough to listen to me and calm my nerves. Thank God for great promptings to see the gynae today... Only God knows what would have happened if we saw the gynae only in 4 weeks' time.

My next appointment is in 2 weeks, where a fetal heartbeat would be seen. =) Following which, she'd prescribe another medication to promote blood flow to the baby.

I just thank God.... I really thank God and supportive family members. =)

    Walking with the Maker

Since Australia, the idea of God as a Maker and Creator has become very apparent to me. His genius plan orchestrated perfectly in all nature... I used to love taking walks, feeling the breeze whistle God's grace, see the sun display God's splendor, listening to birds sing their unique God-given praises. These remind me of how God is everywhere and in everything even though I don't often feel Him or hear Him, I get to see Him everywhere.

But I was jolted when we had a miscarriage in May. It was our first child. Took me a while to get back on my feet and to praise again. Lots of confusion, lots of unknowns and that frustrated me.

Now 4 months from then, we're pregnant again. Although we prayed and committed our next pregnancy to God, there are still fears... fears that are so real to me. I told God frankly that I did not know what trust means and how to trust. Blinders... blinders on horses. Yes, fact is I miscarried once, fact is I cannot see the future and I don't know what the future holds. But there's also another camp of facts: God is God, God is a perfect Maker and Creator, God said yes, and I know that I am blessed, God is good and His plans for me are good and perfect plans to bring Him glory. So blinders. I have been learning to wear blinders. To focus on truth - on what He said and says.

But this is a battle. Yesterday we had a scare, I felt slightly feverish. The last time I felt feverish while pregnant was the day we lost our baby. Fever was the reaction to the dead fetus. I kept reciting verses to myself, putting on blinders. And for a while, I would feel peaceful, and then the next while, I'd feel a wave of fear and uncertainty all over again. So we decided, we would do everything in our power to aid this pregnancy, the rest is, and always has been, in God's hands. We prayed, and Justin took me to the doctor's. Turns out I had mild food poisoning, which explained the diarrhea and excessive wind. Took charcoal pills - which are safe in pregnancy. And today I am feeling much better.

I've only known about this pregnancy for a week today. And already there are battles. But I've had unrealistic expectations, because battles of faith are BATTLES. Which mean there is bound to be fighting involved. How silly of me for expecting to fold my arms and not need to do anything. Yes the Lord of hosts will fight for me, but before He can, I have to first yield. The field of yielding and setting my eyes on God alone is my battle field. Some days I can fight better than others, but thank God for GOD. His grace is more than sufficient, it is abundant and exceeding. More than enough for the days I have no will and strength to fight.

    Whale-ly Updates 2

    Hello readers!

I shall write about whale-ly updates when I get new ones.

I had diarrhea today... 4 times from morning till now... not very pleasant at all =/ ... But not to worry. =) Here's something from a website Justin found to help others like me be more at peace:

Constipation is a common side effect of pregnancy. But what of diarrhea? No pregnant woman wants to suffer from diarrhea during pregnancy. Unfortunately many do. Diarrhea may result from a number of causes during pregnancy. The more common culprits include a lactose intolerance, dietary or hormonal changes or sensitivities to certain foods while pregnant.

Fortunately diarrhea during pregnancy is typically short lived and not something to cause concern. If however you experience diarrhea accompanied by severe nausea or vomiting, it is important you consult with your healthcare provider. You may need medical intervention to help prevent dehydration.
So in a nutshell: diarrhea is quite normal in early pregnancy.

When to worry: When diarrhea is accompanied by dehydration, vomiting, pain or cramps, and/or spotting.

I also noticed soreness in my abdominal area when I raised my voice or walked around too much. Didn't help that I had to watch the younger students today, so raising of voice and walking around was a prerequisite. But all is well when I get to rest a little.

So that's all the new ones I've been getting.

Oops.. one more, I slept at 10.30 last night... Unimaginable... By 9.30 I was struggling to keep my eye lids open. Hehehehe think that's been helping my complexion =D

Shall update when more changes occure.

    Till then,
    tata!
